Merrieweathers is a quintessential English Country House set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Weald on the East Sussex/Kent border.

A large historic house, Merrieweathers is family owned and exudes a warmth and friendliness. Hospitality has been at the heart of the Duthie-Jackson family and at Merrieweathers they have created an exceptional venue which they have shared with guests from near and far over the years.

Nestled in its own valley with rolling meadows, ancient woodland, gardens and beautiful lakes, Merrieweathers is a magical setting for birthday and anniversary parties, family gatherings and holidays and relaxed, romantic wedding receptions.

Introduction

Merrieweathers is an exclusive use venue allowing you you to take over this beautiful private setting and make it feel like home to you and your wedding guests. The house and gardens are an ideal setting for welcome drinks and canapes, garden games and photographs. The setting provides space and areas for you to create exactly the day of your dreams. There are no boundaries, so you can create your own style and theme including the catering of your choice-  a hog roast or an afternoon tea; a 5 course sit down meal or a fish and chip van!

Reception

Nestled in its own estate Merrieweathers provides an exclusive English country house setting for a wedding day designed by you. It is perfect for a small intimate wedding reception for up to 55 people.

We have several approved caterers who can provide everything from a barbecue or hog roast to a formally served wedding breakfast and you are welcome to bring all your own drinks.

Reception drinks on the lawn overlooking the lake may be followed by a sit down wedding breakfast for up to 24 guests in the Dining Room or up to 55 guests in the Great Hall.

Alternatively, an informal fork buffet or hog roast for up to 55 guests can be accommodated in the gardens and house.
For an alternative more relaxed catering option you can hire in mobile catering –pizza, fish and chips and ice-cream vans are a fun and informal catering choice.

Dinner may be followed by dancing to a live band or disco in the walled rose garden Barn. Please note, no music outside and all amplified music in the barn must finish by 10.50 pm (with carriages at 11 pm).

Outdoor Ceremony

Merrieweathers is not currently licensed for a civil ceremony but after the legal part has taken place (nearest registry office is Crowborough) if you would like to hold your ceremony here we can provide the setting and the celebrant for your wedding vows.

There are fundamental differences between a registrar and a celebrant. A registrar will have a limited choice of what can be included in your ceremony. You can ask for certain words, poems, and readings to be included, but often there are restraints on time and around what can be said. The ceremony also has to be held in a licensed building, and cannot be held outdoors in the open air or in a marquee.

A Celebrant creates a unique ceremony every time and no two ceremonies are the same, just as no two couples are the same. One of the biggest and exciting differences is that with a celebrant led ceremony you can hold your ceremony anywhere- in any location. So an outdoor ceremony perhaps under the old oak tree or overlooking the lake, or amongst the bluebells in the woods- are all possibilities open to you.

Our celebrant, Steph Vidler, can officiate your wedding ceremony at Merrieweathers. Not just any ceremony but something that is truly personal: completely unique, completely bespoke. She will work closely with you, and provide a ceremony that is genuinely meaningful, with any elements you wish; spiritual, religious, a mixture or none at all.

Location

Merrieweathers is surrounded with mature trees, gardens and lakes providing endless photo opportunities to create those special images of your day. There is also ancient woodland (with bluebells in the spring), a romantic walled rose garden, magestic oak trees and rolling meadows.
